PAR cans are the most widely used luminaries in stage lighting and theatrical lighting. These fixtures are fairly simple, consisting of a cylindrical aluminum steel tube that is closed at the rear. ‘PAR’ stands for parabolic aluminized reflector. The lamp used in a PAR can has a reflector which amplifies and concentrates the light and that the light produced pools in a parabola, or an oval. Coming through the rear of PAR cans is a socket that holds the PAR can bulbs or PAR can LED bulbs and provides power to it. Many PAR can bulbs and PAR can LED bulbs will have gel frames at the front of the can to hold color gels and provide colored light for the stage or musical act being illuminated.

PAR cans are available in many sizes from PAR 64 to PAR 16. A PAR 64 can, for example, supports a PAR 64 bulb which is 64/8 of an inch in diameter, or 8 inches in diameter.
